What honest debt triage looks like next to the field

Most debt apps either track what you owe (useful but passive) or sell you something while claiming to help (predatory). Freshstart is neither. This page tracks what competitors do so we know which features are genuinely useful — and which are sales funnels dressed as advice.

The field

Credit Karma
Free — lead-gen for lenders
Shows your credit score and recommends cards/loans. Helpful for monitoring; the "recommendations" are paid placements. No real debt counseling.
NerdWallet
Free — affiliate commissions
Comparison tool for loans, cards, refinancing. Good editorial content; conversion goal is always a product click. No intake for "I'm already in trouble."
Upsolve
Free — nonprofit bankruptcy prep
Fills out Chapter 7 forms for people who qualify. Excellent at its narrow job. No triage for people who don't yet know if bankruptcy is the answer.
National Debt Relief
15–25% of enrolled debt
Settlement negotiations. Fees are large; requires stopping payments (credit damage). Not always disclosed upfront. Legitimate but incentivized toward enrollment.
GreenPath
Nonprofit — counseling fees vary
HUD-approved, legitimate counseling. Long intake, phone-first. No app. Excellent for people ready to talk to someone; high friction for first exploration.
Debt.com
Lead-gen — sells to partners
Aggregator that matches users to settlement/credit-repair services. "Free help" that ends in a sales pitch. Useful as a cautionary example of what not to build.
The gap we fill: None of these apps are good at the first question — "what kind of debt problem do I actually have?" Most assume you know, or rush past intake to get you into a product. Freshstart's six-category intake is the feature no competitor has built honestly.

P0 — add now

P0Plain-language outcome preview — after intake, show 2–3 paths in plain English ("you qualify for self-negotiation / a DMP / possibly Chapter 7"). NerdWallet gives product recommendations; we give honest options. Upsolve does this for bankruptcy only.
P0Category-specific next step — each of the 6 debt categories (credit card, medical, student, auto, mortgage, tax) should suggest a specific first action, not a generic "talk to an advisor." GreenPath does this in counseling sessions; nobody does it in self-serve.
P0No-phone intake completion — GreenPath requires a call. Upsolve requires creating an account. Freshstart should let someone get a real result on their phone in 3 minutes without registering.

P1 — next cycle

P1Local nonprofit referral (not paid) — link to HUD-approved counselors or NFCC members by ZIP code. Not a lead-gen form — a real link to a vetted nonprofit. No commission. Competitors can't do this because their model requires the referral fee.
P1Debt-to-income calculator — Credit Karma shows credit score but not DTI. This is the one number that tells you if self-negotiation is realistic or if you need professional help. Build it before Phase 2 attorney matching.

Won't build

SKIPPaid referral to attorneys or settlement companies — the Debt.com / NDR model. This creates a conflict of interest at the exact moment when someone is most vulnerable. Phase 2 attorney matching (if it happens) charges the attorney a fair flat fee, never a percentage of debt enrolled.
SKIPCredit monitoring / score tracking — Credit Karma already does this and it's table stakes for that category. Adding it would build data liability without adding a meaningful capability gap over what exists for free.
SKIPGuaranteed outcome claims — "debt free in 30 days," "stop collections now." These claims are either false or buried in fine print. Freshstart documents what the app can actually do, nothing more.

Marketing brief: marketing/ · Hub: freshstart-app · Phase 1 only — no attorney marketplace claims.
