His story

From debugging code to holding space on the mat.

Before he was ever "Barry, your yoga teacher," he was Barry the software engineer — spending his days solving problems in front of a screen. Yoga entered his life the way it does for a lot of people: as a way to decompress. What started as an occasional class became a daily discipline, and that discipline eventually became devotion.

Barry is a committed Ashtanga Mysore practitioner, the traditional self-paced style where students move through the sequence at their own rhythm under a teacher's close guidance. That practice reshaped how he understands yoga entirely — not as a workout, but as an integral part of his own yogic journey. Teaching, for Barry, isn't separate from practicing. It's a continuation of it.

He left the software world behind to teach full time, and over more than a decade on the mat he's built a reputation across Bay Area studios and clubs for classes that are detailed, challenging, and genuinely attentive to where each student is in their body that day. Solid, consistent reviews from students back that up — the kind of word-of-mouth reputation that doesn't come from a marketing budget.

Today, Barry channels that same engineer's precision — the instinct to understand systems from the inside out — into anatomy, sequencing, and cueing. It's part of why he founded selfLove.Yoga: to pass on real, down-to-earth instruction and train the next generation of skilled, knowledgeable teachers, without the inflated price tag of a typical studio program.
