Feature Adoption Plan — What Trackmint Borrows From Each Tool

Date: July 18, 2026 · Consolidates the seven competitor deep-dives (Asana, Jira, PracticePanther, Glade AI, MyCase, Housecall Pro, Clio) into one build plan.

Rule used throughout: adopt a feature only if it (a) serves the core loop — track work → log time → budget → invoice → get paid (→ AI forms) — or (b) fixes a complaint theme from the 145-complaint study. Everything else is a distraction, no matter how shiny.

1. From each tool: what we take, what we skip

Asana (work management)

Feature Verdict Why
Multiple views (list, board, calendar) on the same items Adopt now Cheap to add once data model is right; users expect it
My Tasks personal dashboard Adopt now Solo users live here; simple
Rules/automation engine (“when card moves → do X”) Adopt later (v2) High value, but complexity killed Asana’s UX — start with 5-10 preset rules, not a builder
Project templates Adopt now This IS profession packs — seed boards per pack
Forms intake → task Adopt later Maps to client intake in Legal pack
Portfolios, goals/OKRs Skip Enterprise features; not our buyer
AI Studio credit-based agents Skip Their complexity + credit pricing is a complaint magnet
Their mistakes to avoid — Seat banding (5-seat bundles), no solo plan, timer paywalled behind $24.99+add-on, notification overload

Jira (issue tracking)

Feature Verdict Why
Issue types (bug/feature/task) + custom fields Adopt now Core of Software Dev pack; keep to a few types
Kanban with WIP limits + swimlanes Adopt now (WIP limits v2) The board is our home screen
Sprints + backlog (optional toggle) Adopt later (v2) Contractors often don’t sprint; make it opt-in per board
Burndown/velocity reports Adopt later Only after sprints exist
JQL-style saved filters Adopt later Simple filter bar first; query language much later
Workflow editor (custom statuses per project) Partial now Custom column names yes; full transition rules/validators no — that’s Jira’s complexity trap
Automation with natural-language creation (Rovo-style) Skip for now Revisit when AI stack is mature
Their mistakes to avoid — Config maze needing admins, slow performance (“4 min to load a ticket”), billing requires paid marketplace apps (Tempo taxing every seat)
Feature Verdict Why
Multiple simultaneous timers, time entry from anything (event, email, task) Adopt now Best-in-class idea; our timers must be this convenient AND reliable (theirs are buggy — that’s the opening)
MoneyFinder (flags unbilled activities) Adopt now Directly serves “stop losing billable hours” — a killer small feature
Custom rates by user/matter/activity Adopt now Rate cards are core Mid-tier
Batch invoicing + branded invoice templates Adopt now (templates v2) Month-end batch is flow SW-07/BK-09
Payment plans / recurring billing Adopt now Consumer bankruptcy runs on installments
Trust/IOLTA accounting Adopt later (Legal pack v2) Compliance-heavy; defer until legal pack has traction
LEDES billing Skip for v1 Only insurance-defense firms need it
Client portal + intake forms Adopt later Needed for Legal pack doc collection (BK-02)
2-way texting Adopt later See Housecall Pro comms bundle below
Their mistakes to avoid — Buggy timers, broken report math, 10-year-old API, weak mobile, no boards

Glade AI (AI doc-to-form)

Feature Verdict Why
Doc upload → OCR/AI extraction → filled official forms Adopt (Advanced tier, the thesis) The whole point; ours is multi-profession
Confidence scores + source tracing per field Adopt now (in AI module) Their best design; attorneys must see where every number came from
Automated document requests + follow-up reminders to clients Adopt now (with AI module) Doc collection is half the pain (flow BK-02)
Conflict detection across documents (W-2 vs pay stub) Adopt now (in AI module) Trust-building; we demoed it in BK-03
CM/ECF e-filing Adopt later (v3) Real but heavy; export-for-filing first
Post-filing automation (PACER notices → tasks) Adopt later Great retention feature once filing exists
Their mistakes to avoid — Opaque quote-only pricing (we publish per-case prices), no time tracking/hourly billing (we have it), no independent reviews (we farm G2/Capterra early)

MyCase (8am)

Feature Verdict Why
Payments included at every tier (LawPay rails, next-day deposits) Adopt now (strategy) The single biggest lesson of the all-in-one study — payments revenue subsidizes seats
Client “Pay Later” financing (Affirm-style) Adopt later Powerful for legal + contractor invoices; needs a fintech partner
Unlimited built-in eSignature Adopt later Undercuts DocuSign cost for small firms; good Pro-tier bait
Batch invoice generation Adopt now Same as PP
8am IQ-style AI (summarize case, draft text) Adopt later Our AI budget goes to form-filling first — summarization is table stakes we add after
Case Analytics Skip for v1 Reporting depth later
Their mistakes to avoid — Price creep with feature re-gating ($39→$50 entry), linear-only automation, document-only tags, mobile app lag

Housecall Pro (field service)

Feature Verdict Why
Automated customer comms (“on my way” texts, reminders, follow-ups) Adopt later (v2, all packs) Their #1 loved feature; for lawyers = hearing reminders; for devs = status updates
Automated review requests after job/matter completion Adopt later (v2) Cheap growth engine for our customers AND their customers
Instant payouts (Instapay-style, ~30 min for a fee) Adopt later Slow deposits are a real PP complaint; needs payment-processor depth
Consumer financing in invoices (Wisetack) Adopt later Same partner pattern as Pay Later above
Good/better/best quotes Adopt later (GC pack) Estimate-to-job flow GC-01
Price book Adopt later (GC pack) Standard line items = faster invoices
Job costing on all plans Adopt now We already have budgets; job costing = budgets + expenses done right
Recurring service plans/memberships Adopt later Retainers (SW-10) are our version; membership billing later
CSR AI (answers calls, books jobs) Skip Different product category; partner instead
Drag-drop dispatch calendar + GPS Adopt later (GC pack only) Core for field crews, irrelevant to devs/lawyers
Their mistakes to avoid — Sales-quoted add-on pricing, cancellation friction, Android app neglect, feature-gating that forces tier jumps

Clio (the $5B leader)

Feature Verdict Why
Matter budgets Adopt now Validates our budget feature; Clio is the only legal rival with it
Court-rules deadline engine (trigger date → deadline chain) Adopt later (Legal pack v2) Huge legal value; license from LawToolBox-style vendor rather than build 1,000 jurisdictions
Text-to-pay Adopt later Proven collection booster
Payment plans (always-on) Adopt now Same as PP/MyCase — table stakes in consumer legal
Bill approval workflows Adopt later Multi-user firms only; v2
Matter Stages (matter-level pipeline board) Already ours Our Matter Board IS this — but at every tier, not $109 Advanced
Client portal mobile app (Clio for Clients) Adopt later After core mobile app is solid
AI matter summaries + deadline extraction (Duo) Adopt later After form-filling AI ships
Draft-style template libraries (state/USCIS forms) Adopt later (new packs) This is our profession-pack expansion path — they validated it at “from $49/mo”
E-filing (Clio File, AI Autofill) Adopt later (v3) Their 3-state rollout shows how hard it is; don’t lead with it
Their mistakes to avoid — Add-on stacking (+70% true cost over list), “basic” task management, setup burden, Grow↔︎Manage disconnect between intake and work

2. The consolidated build order

Adopt NOW → belongs in MVP (Basic + Mid tiers)

  1. Kanban board + issue/matter types + custom fields (Jira) — with list/calendar views (Asana)
  2. Profession-pack templates seeding boards (Asana templates + our packs)
  3. Reliable multi-timers + time entry from anywhere (PracticePanther — fixed)
  4. MoneyFinder-style unbilled-work radar (PracticePanther)
  5. Rate cards by user/client/activity (PracticePanther/Clio)
  6. Budgets/job costing with 80% warnings (Clio budgets + HCP job costing)
  7. Batch + one-tap invoicing, payment plans (PP/MyCase/Clio)
  8. Payments included at every paid tier (MyCase/LawPay lesson)
  9. My Tasks view (Asana)
  10. AI module foundation with confidence + source tracing + doc requests + conflict detection (Glade) — Advanced tier

Adopt LATER → v2 (first year after launch)

Sprints/backlog toggle + burndown (Jira) · preset automation rules (Asana/Jira) · client portal + intake forms (PP/Clio) · automated customer comms + review requests (HCP) · eSignature (MyCase) · text-to-pay + instant payouts + financing partner (Clio/HCP/MyCase) · court-rules deadline engine via vendor (Clio) · trust accounting (PP) · AI summaries (MyCase IQ/Clio Duo) · GC pack: dispatch calendar, price book, good/better/best quotes (HCP)

Adopt LATER → v3 (expansion)

E-filing (CM/ECF for bankruptcy; state courts later) (Glade/Clio File) · post-filing automation (Glade) · template libraries for new profession packs (Clio Draft path) · memberships/recurring plans (HCP) · workflow builder (Asana/Jira — carefully)

SKIP (deliberately)

Portfolios/OKRs, AI agent studios, CSR phone AI, LEDES (v1), JQL, full workflow-transition engines, enterprise permission schemes — every one of these is either not our buyer or a documented complexity/complaint trap.

3. The anti-feature list (what the complaint study forbids)

These aren’t features — they’re promises, and they came straight from the 145 complaints:

  1. Public prices on the website, always (vs. Glade/Best Case/Accelo quote-walls)
  2. No seat banding — pay for exactly the seats you use, solo plan exists (vs. Asana)
  3. Timers in every plan that has time tracking — never a paid add-on (vs. Asana/Jira)
  4. Self-serve cancellation, prorated refunds (vs. HCP/PP/MyCase friction)
  5. Speed budget: board loads < 1s at 1,000 items (vs. Jira/Asana slowness)
  6. Mobile parity on core flows, Android treated equal to iOS (vs. everyone)
  7. A real, versioned public API from day one (vs. PP’s decade-stale API)
  8. No feature re-gating after purchase (vs. MyCase price-creep pattern)
